"My grandfather was a leather maker... and had served in the Kaiser’s army during World War I."
Story
"My father was born in December of 1924 in Berlin.
They were fairly well-off economically. He was one of two children. He was the older of the two. His sister, Ruth, was born a couple years later. My grandfather was a leather maker-- at least that was his trade. And he had served in the Kaiser’s army during World War I and was actually injured during the war. He carried his papers with him all the time. He was very proud to be a German. That was kind of his thought. They were very well-integrated into the German society."
