Ball and Chain

“We were grounded flyers and we had our wings, but we came up with, somebody in the camp came up with a symbol for us which was our wings with a chain and a ball attached to it. So we used our dog tag chains and the cans of food we got from red cross parcels, some of it was sealed with lead, around the tops, so we’d take those cans and melt the lead and form little half balls in the sand with the chain stuck in it and then with a safety pin on the back and so this was our symbol over there – ball and chain. The wings with the ball and chain.”
