Pioneers in the Jungle

Parents' Early Life Together

"She talked of having to deal with poisonous snakes."

"My parents met in South America where my father was working at that time and my mother was visiting. They got married and bought land in the interior to raise cattle. I understand that it was a day to a
day-and-a-half ride on horseback outside of Rio de Janeiro. My father built their house.

I remember some stories my mother told of the pioneer style of existence. She talked of making furniture out of tree sections, not boards; of having to deal with many types of poisonous snakes and other jungle animals coming into the house. My parents had a daughter when they lived in the wilds of Brazil, who died as an infant."
