Story

"We were camping out. My parents had a tent, and we went to Lake Arrowhead, which is about forty miles East of L.A. near San Bernandino. It’s up in the mountains. And one day, they said, 'The war is over.' I said, 'Oh, that’s great. You know, at least'—but that’s not the whole war. 'It’s only war in Europe,' they said, 'There’s another war going on in Japan or in the Far East.' So I said, 'Okay.'

But I figured the war for us was over, but it wasn’t, of course, you know what happened after that. The Japanese gave up later, and then the war was really over in August of 1945."
