“Well, I was in the recruiting duty when I was in the Wac’s. I did public relations; I tried to recruit other Wacs. And I think perhaps there that it was an asset, being able to speak easily like I do. I suppose that might have had something to do with some of my training. I learned about the news media, I think, at that particular time---how to work with the news media.”

Grace wanted to serve her country in World War II and so she began working at the Ford Motor Company in 1943 helping to build aircraft. However, wanting to get more involved in the war, Grace decided to enlist in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). She trained at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia and attained the rank of corporal. She then began recruiting in Tuscan, Arizona, and then at Camp White in Oregon. Later she was sent to New Guinea, and then the Philippines where she was discharged in 1945. Grace received seven medals for her work with the WAC.
