Success as a Senator

Russell's Achievements in Office

“Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That this Act may be cited as the ‘National School Lunch Act’.”

Editor’s Note: The above quote is from the Congressional Record concerning the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act. A great deal of Russell’s efforts as a Georgia Senator revolved around agriculture both at home and abroad. He would be quickly appointed to the Agriculture and Forestry Committee where he would often head many bills to help farmers across the nation. However, one bill would have a lasting impact. In 1946, a bill known as the, Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act, came to pass. This bill allows for low-cost or free lunches to those in need. It is still in use today by schools around the United States. Acts like these helped cement in the minds of those around him that Russell was a senator deserving of the admiration many had for him.
