Following the court case, King v. Chapman, that prohibited an all-white primary in Georgia, African Americans registered by the thousands to vote in the 1946 gubernatorial campaign. Eugene Talmadge ran on the platform of reinstating the all-white primary and used racist rhetoric in his speeches across the state. Violence against African Americans often ensued following many of Eugene Talmadge's 1946 campaign visits and speeches.
