"Well, it just absolutely scared me to death because the day it came over the radio, I was taking a nap and—curled up in my bed—and my parents had gone out for a walk, and I couldn’t tell anybody. So as soon as they got home, why, I said, 'We’re at war!' And they couldn’t believe it either, you know? And it didn’t affect us at that time, but I was in my freshman year at the University of Detroit, and...that changed completely. Everybody went out—it was 75 percent boys, 25 percent girls, and all those boys wanted to go and save the world. And so...when I got to the end of that year in June, I went looking for a job."
