"Well, we started off in Bremerhaven, and I remember we were on the S.S. Marine Flasher... As we approached the Harbor of New York, and we saw the Statue of Liberty, it was really a feeling of a new life beginning-- perhaps a life of freedom.
I went to Peekskill, New York, and my cousin was a very kind, very nice person, but one thing she told me is forget about the past and start a new life as though that was possible. So I never talked about it. People didn’t ask and I didn’t tell."
