“I had different duties as (a) ‘healthy’ prisoner. I had the kindergarten in the morning while the mothers were working in the fields. If the children were tired from sitting, we would make a walk, looking for pretty stones, count the leaves on the trees. The bushes were bare, the leaves eaten raw. The kitchen girls came with great big pots to serve the rations. I still have my measuring cup! I can’t remember what we actually got for breakfast. Sometimes we got two slices of bread, sometimes it was a hard little loaf meant for several days.”
