“...you’d be surprised what could stay if you’d burn it and not stir it up.”

“There was some [secret work]. And too when I had the secret work of somebody who would walk in where I was at my desk. I had to roll this under — down in the typewriter. Or if I had it out, I had to turn it over where nobody could see it. I didn’t like to work with that because if somebody did see it and reported it, you was in trouble.”

“I used to [destroy documents], like if you made a mistake. We had a certain amount of time before we had to leave work. And we’d go to this building that had a furnace in it and we’d put this in there and burn it and stir the ashes because you’d be surprised what could stay if you’d burn it and not stir it up.”

“I didn’t like the secrecy of it because you’d be typing something and somebody would come to your desk and you’d have to roll it under or get rid of it somehow. You couldn’t let anyone see it if it was a secret. I worked in secret work.”
