ID: A letter addressed to Evelyn Davis from Guy T. Gunter Jr. and dated March 1, 1943. It reads: “Hello beautiful: as you can plainly see, I have had the picture of my favorite girl drawn on this letter for you to pass your approval on. What do you think of her? Personally, I think she is pretty neat. Listen darling, I received my first official leave some time ago and visited Cairo and Alexandria. Cairo is a very modern city, but is very dirty. While there, Burl, Lockard, and I saw the Egyptian Cotton Exposition, citadel, and the Sphinx and Pyramids. They are something that you have to see before you can really appreciate them. He made some pictures, which I am sending to you. The people of Cairo are very nice to the American troops as they think all Americans are rich. If you could see some of the prices we paid for food, hotel accommodations, and etc., you would think so too. I like Alexandria much better than Cairo, as it is built on the European plan. You can … anything you want, and a lots that you don’t want. The things that are rationed in the good ‘ole USA are very plentiful here. Of course, the prices are prohibitive through. We met a Greek fellow that owned several of the better cabarets in Alexandria, and he had us out to the Carlton and Metropolitan cabarets as his guests. We were nothing but big shots for a night. I have never been treated as royally before. He had his orchestra play special American popular numbers for us, a very nice dinner, and many other niceties that I won’t mention. By the way, I received a letter from Gordon Myers. I certainly was surprised as well as pleased. He seems to be happy about his new job with the navy. I think we should have more fellows like him. I haven’t received a letter from you in some time. You haven’t broken your arm by any chance have you? I suppose it is because you are so busy with your work. Well, be good, and think of ‘ole Guy Jr. once in a while.” There is a drawing of a woman from the shoulders up in the center of the letter.
