Obituary for Lorenzo Wallace's maternal grandmother Mary Crolley, former slave and Atlanta prison worker, either from the Atlanta Daily World or the Atlanta Constitution, c.a 1930s.

ID: A yellowed newspaper clipping titled “Aged Prison Worker, Former Slave Dies.” It reads “Mary Crolley, 77 years of age… 1101 Capitol avenue, S. W., died… her home Tuesday night. For over… years she has voluntarily done religious work among prisoners in the jails, prison camps and chaingangs of Georgia. In addition to distributing religious literature among prisoners, she aided them to get in touch with their families and responded to every call without any financial compensation whatsoever. Her work was not confined to colored prisoners alone but to all, regardless of race or sex. She was respected by judges, sheriffs, wardens and guards who gave her every courtesy and assistance in carrying on her work. At the age of five she was sold on the slave block at McDonough, Ga. After the war between the states, she married Rev. John Crolley, who survives her. He is a minister in the Methodist Episcopal church and has lived and worked throughout the state over a half century. To this union 15 children were born of which nine survive. She is also survived by two brothers, one sister and four great-grandchildren.”
